Hilla Community Centre

History

Hilla Community Centre in Ampang, Selangor, began as a compassionate response by a small group of Korean expatriates and Malaysians living in Kuala Lumpur to the plight of refugees. Their primary objective was to provide basic education to children. The initiative started in premises offered by a Korean language studio in Ampang, commencing with an informal English class for Afghan children in October 2007. This humble beginning marked the birth of Hilla Community Centre, where “Hilla” translates to “hope” in the Pashto language, reflecting their aspiration to instill hope in Afghan and other refugee communities. Over time, the Centre expanded its classes, addressing various subjects and even vocational training for adults.

Services

Initially, the Centre focused on teaching English, recognizing the urgent need for refugees to communicate in a foreign land. The program grew with the dedication of volunteer teachers, and today, the curriculum includes Bahasa Malaysia, Mathematics, Science, Arts and Craft, Piano, Vocal, and Computers. The Centre organizes educational trips and provides physical education classes and a playground for students. Notably, the Malaysian Ministry of Education granted refugees the opportunity to sit for local government exams in 2009, requiring the Centre to employ proper tutors to support students in their studies.

Hilla Community Centre expanded its initiatives to offer job training and counseling for adult refugees. Subjects like computer skills and hairdressing were introduced, and efforts were made to find employment for adults in various fields.

Hilla Community Centre’s vision is to uplift refugee communities in Ampang, Selangor, through education and job training, providing them with essential skills to improve their situations and self-esteem.
