PJ Caring Home is a haven for the homeless and economically disadvantaged mentally ill. It was established in June 2002 by Mr. Uthaya Perumal, known as Peru. The home employs an open concept approach, allowing most patients to lead ordinary lives and encouraging their integration into society.

The home houses 107 patients, spanning ages from 17 to 87, in three separate PJ area houses: a Boys’ home, a Girls’ home, and an Elderly’s Home. A dedicated team of twelve full-time staff assists with guidance, medical transport, meal preparation, daily errands, administration, and organizing patient activities like gardening projects, classroom activities, games, and exercise programs. Professional counseling programs are also available to aid patient progress.

The primary objective is to destigmatize mental illness. Mr. Peru believes it is a sickness, not a stigma, and that patients should not be marginalized or ridiculed by society. The aim is to foster an accepting and caring community to support patients’ recovery.

The home seeks volunteers, donations of consumables (rice, salt, oil, sugar, toiletries), and assistance with medication costs. Running expenses, including monthly rental, electricity, telephone bills, staff salaries, and medical expenses, also require funding. Support is needed for an additional car used for patient transportation. Donations are welcomed through RHB Bank account number 21403500119590, or by making checks payable to “PJ Caring Home”.
