The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) is a non-profit voluntary organization that operates under the guidance of an elected committee, consisting of individuals and professionals dedicated to the well-being of the community. Established in 1967 by a group of mental health experts and community leaders affiliated with University Hospital, MMHA officially registered under the Societies Act 1966 on July 30th, 1968.
MMHA’s Objectives:
1. Promote mental health within the community.
2. Enhance the standards of treatment, prevention, and research in the field of mental health.
3. Provide rehabilitative services for individuals with mental illnesses.
4. Safeguard the interests and welfare of psychiatric patients.
5. Offer support to caregivers and family members of individuals with mental illnesses.
History of MMHA:
Founded in 1967 by staff members from University Malaya Medical Centre (formerly University Hospital), MMHA emerged from a collective of psychiatrists, psychologists, medical social workers, nurses, and occupational therapists involved in the care of individuals with mental disorders. Recognizing the need for non-governmental support for psychiatric patients in recovery, MMHA has since evolved to include members from diverse backgrounds.
Mission:
MMHA is committed to promoting mental health and increasing awareness about mental well-being and illnesses within the community. The organization advocates for positive attitudes towards mental health, with a focus on destigmatizing mental illness. Additionally, MMHA provides rehabilitation services for individuals recovering from mental illnesses, safeguards the interests of people with mental disorders, and offers support to caregivers and family members of affected individuals. MMHA collaborates with others in the fields of education, training, and research to promote mental health in the country.
MMHA seeks to create an atmosphere of acceptance, acknowledgment, and understanding for individuals with mental health disorders. They reject stigmatizing labels and refer to their beneficiaries as ‘clients’ and ‘friends’ to emphasize their individuality and the right to be heard and understood like anyone else. MMHA views mental suffering as a response to overwhelming life challenges rather than a loss of senses and aims to provide a nurturing environment for recovery and healing.
