MERCY Malaysia, formerly known as the Malaysian Medical Relief Society, emerged in 1999 during the Kosovo war when Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, a Malaysian obstetrician-gynaecologist, was deeply moved by the suffering of civilians, particularly women and children. With no national organization ready to assist in international crises, Dr. Jemilah, along with a few like-minded individuals, founded MERCY Malaysia. Their aim was to provide Malaysians with a platform to engage in the international humanitarian arena.

Dr. Jemilah led the organization’s first mission to Kosovo in June 1999, followed by several other missions. These teams were composed of Malaysians from diverse backgrounds, all united in the mission to aid others, irrespective of race, religion, culture, or geographical boundaries.

Over the past decade, MERCY Malaysia has expanded its reach, conducting missions in disaster-affected areas and implementing programs in various countries facing different crises. As a registered society under the Societies Act, MERCY Malaysia boasts over 500 members and has received support from approximately 5,000 registered volunteers.

**Mission and Core Values:**
MERCY Malaysia’s mission is to provide medical relief, sustainable health-related development, and risk reduction activities for vulnerable communities in both crisis and non-crisis situations. The organization’s core values include motivation, excellence, respect, collaboration, and a strong desire to serve. All staff and volunteers are expected to uphold these values while representing MERCY Malaysia in various capacities.
