The setting up of  Sekolah Semangat Maju Kuala Kangsar was approved by the PAFID Executive Council at its meeting held on the 22Nov 1998. It was scheduled to be operational in January 1999.

The appointed chairman was Mr Tan Boon Hoe. Secretary Mr. Carter Wong Geok Tiong and Treasurer being Mr Tan Ah Lam respectively. A teacher from SSM Ipoh, Puan Sarah was seconded to head the school.

The school was temporary housed at a corner double storey terraced house in Taman Indah. In August 1999 the school was moved to a bungalow along Jalan Taiping. As there was some limitation to its usage the committee at its meeting held in Dec 1999 decided to move to a single storey wooden building with a compound situated at 33, Jalan Dato’ Sagor.

Mr Carter Wong resigned due to work commitment. In 2001 Dato’ Dr. Arunasalam had  graciously consented to be the next Chairman. Mr Ramakrishnan took over for a short period and resigned after his transfer by his  company to  Kuala Lumpur.

On 30th June 2002 Mr. Joseph Lau had been asked to take over the post of caretaker  Chairman  from Mr Ramakrishnan. During the care taker chairmanship Puan Sarah resigned and Puan Uvarany acted as head teacher. The following year she asked to be transferred to SSM Taiping, leaving the school under temporary teachers.

We moved to the new building  in March 2010 and we hope that this will be the bases of substantial growth for the school. We are fortunate that many senior officials have assisted us in refurbishing the school and providing   additional support. We further hope that with  Yang Teramat Mulia Raja Azureen Bt Sultan Azlan Shah as the patron for the school, we will succeed in being a prominent part of the service community in Kuala Kangsar.
