What goes on at Siloam Home?

THE PROGRAMMES

Each person that joins a family will be given guidance and basic training in the activities of daily living such as self help skills, personal hygiene, and most importantly, forming relationships and becoming a member of the family. Work discipline and work attitudes also form part of the training for those who have the potential for gainful employment.

The work placement and support staff makes regular assessments of the person’s independent living skills and his/ her potential for open employment. Work will be found and support given so that the person can succeed in the work place. For those who need more supervision in the performance of their work, contract work and Siloam’s farm activities and retreat centre can also be a part of the person’s daily occupation.

Other activities such as sports and social activities are arranged to enable everyone to have an opportunity to participate and have a wider circle of friends.

WHAT WE DO

  1. We set up family units to meet those who need a home
  2. We find them jobs and support them in the work place
  3. We create jobs within the home so that every member can be employed
  4. We conduct holiday programmes
  5. We give respite care to enable parents to take a break
  6. Siloam House was registered in July 2001. Our first family home was started in March 2002; in a house given rent free by the kindness of Mrs. Janet Ho. Mrs. Ho, mother of David, a man with Down syndrome, was therefore instrumental in the setting of our first home.
  7. In September 2004, we started building another home in Karak in a piece of land donated to Siloam by Mrs Wong Mei Kheng. A property developer, Mr. Wong Ah Chiew, has kindly donated towards the cost of the building.
  8. In August 2005, we rented a house located in the next road from the first house which is now home for the girls. This made it possible to bring in more people who are in need of a home. This second house became home for the boys but they were one family with the girls whom they share meals and evenings together.
  9. As of 1 January 2008, Siloam House operations were moved to Karak, Pahang. We now have 16 family members living in this house. This house sits on an acre of land.
  10. Three more acres are given for our use rent free, to grow vegetables, fruit trees and chicken. Our main occupation is to look after our farm.We have around 18 mature mangosteen trees promising a good crop.
  11. We also keep Poustinia our guest house and retreat home in good shape for our visitors. Poustinia means hermitage or a place away. We invite you to come and enjoy the quietness of Poustinia. Come visit us!
