Asylum Access Malaysia (AAM) was launched in 2014 as part of the Asylum Access family of organizations.

Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and does not have any legal or administrative framework for refugees and asylum seekers. There are currently about 150,000 refugees in Malaysia registered with the UNHCR. However, they are constantly at risk of arrest, deportation and exploitation. Refugees in Malaysia also do not have access to formal education, healthcare and work.

AAM makes a difference by providing free legal advice, representation and information sessions to refugees to assist them with the UNHCR Refugee Status Determination (RSD) process. In addition to legal services, AAM conducts ‘Know-Your-Options’ workshops on education, livelihoods, healthcare, protection and justice. AAM also engages with relevant stakeholders to advocate for better protection and rights policies for refugees in Malaysia. Our proven track record of global and national-level policy change has helped thousands of refugees live safely, move freely, work, send children to school and rebuild their lives.
