Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) is committed to end animal cruelty and ultimately help to improve the welfare of animals in Malaysia. The idea to form this organization came during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Did you know that cases of animal cruelty increased during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period? We started noticing that more animals have been treated badly with cruelty cases rising, not just in Malaysia, but globally. In Kuala Lumpur alone, it was reported that case have tripled since MCO had taken effect (New Straits Times, April 2020). Many of these cases were animals that were abandoned by pet owners, who feared contracting COVID-19 from their pets or were unable to care for them after losing their source of income due to the MCO. They were also cases during lockdown of domestic violence that begin with family pets. Pets are often used as tools of control, and that an abusive partner may threaten a companion animal’s life. We are absolutely appalled. How could pet owners become so cruel?

During the MCO lockdown as well, stray dogs and cats on the street went hungry. With business premises closed during the lockdown, they were left with no access to food and water to survive. This led to a group of us to act and feed these poor animals.

The sad reality of the situation is the impetus for us to form this organization. We realize that animal cruelty must stop, and it can only stop if we do something. We aim to end animal cruelty and restore respect for all animals in Malaysia by being their voice.

People
We are made up of Malaysians from various backgrounds with our love for animals uniting us. Together, our vision is to be an animal-based advocacy under Malaysian Law, to end the suffering of wild animals and ensure humane treatment of dogs and cats. We believe that animals are entitled to be treated with kindness and respect and must always be protected.

Approach
We are dedicated to establishing this organization and help animals to get the protection under the Akta Kebajikan Haiwan 2015. As a team, we work together to educate the local communities for the welfare of animals and people.

Promoting compassion
We aim to promote compassion towards street animals that need love and care through our street feeding project. Dogs and cats on the street may lack access to food with the right nutrients for their health and our daily feeding ensures that they are able to meet their nutritional need.

Acting on animal cruelty report
Our hotline number is available for anyone to reach out and report to us any act of animal cruelty seen around their neighbourhood. All cases reported will be investigated accordingly. We will get to the root cause of the issue regardless of how complex the situation is for the benefit of these animals. The rescuers and fosterers in our team work closely together to fight against animal cruelty.

Engagement and Collaboration
We collaborate with authorities, agencies, NGOs and other parties on animal welfare issues in Malaysia.

With the community, we aim to spread awareness on handling companion animals such as dogs and cats and to increase the awareness of welfare needs of captive wild animals

We also aim to engage with residence management, Joint Management Body (JMB) and Management Corporation (MC) and offer suggestions on the right stray animal management in strata properties.
