Persatuan Orang – Orang Cacat Anggota Malaysia (POCAM), also known as the Society of the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Malaysia, was formed in 1976 by the disabled themselves. It is dedicated to promoting the interests and general well-being of its members and other disabled people in Malaysia. It currently has over one thousand members across the country.

The management of POCAM is under the control of elected members and they are assisted by voluntary helpers and four full-time employees. POCAM complies strictly with the requirements of the Registrar of Societies, and its accounts are audited regularly by a public accounting firm.

The aims and objectives of POCAM include:

  • Bringing about spirit among its members
  • Finding ways and means of improving the physical, special, and economic conditions of the orthopedically handicapped
  • Helping in the education, training, employment, and resettlement in society of the orthopedically handicapped
  • Organizing sport, social, and other events for the benefit of the orthopedically handicapped
  • Initiating, assisting, and organizing such other schemes for the orthopedically handicapped as may be desired by the Society for their welfare and rehabilitation
  • Raising, receiving, administering, and distributing such funds and goods in kind as are entrusted to the Society
  • Disseminating information, publishing periodicals, and holding meetings to educate parents of orthopedically handicapped children in particular and the public in general
  • Making recommendations to the government, and advocating and promoting laws, amendments to laws, and other government regulations in the interests of the orthopedically handicapped
  • Affiliating with other bodies within Malaysia having like aims and objects
  • Affiliating with the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (the world controlling body for paraplegic sports), of Harvey Road, Aylesbury, England, and in the future with other international bodies having aims and objects similar to those of the Society, with the prior approval of the Registrar of Societies in each case.

Persatuan Orang – Orang Cacat Anggota Malaysia (POCAM), juga dikenali sebagai Society of the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Malaysia, ditubuhkan pada tahun 1976 oleh orang kurang upaya sendiri. Ia berdedikasi untuk mempromosikan kepentingan dan kesejahteraan umum ahli-ahlinya dan orang kurang upaya lain di Malaysia. Kini, ia mempunyai lebih daripada seribu ahli di seluruh negara.

Pengurusan POCAM berada di bawah kawalan ahli yang dipilih dan mereka dibantu oleh pembantu sukarela dan empat pekerja sepenuh masa. POCAM mematuhi dengan ketat keperluan Pendaftar Pertubuhan, dan akaunnya diaudit secara berkala oleh firma perakaunan awam.

Matlamat dan objektif POCAM termasuk:

  • Membangkitkan semangat di kalangan ahli-ahlinya
  • Mencari cara dan sumber untuk meningkatkan keadaan fizikal, khas dan ekonomi orang kurang upaya ortopedik
  • Membantu dalam pendidikan, latihan, pekerjaan, dan penempatan semula dalam masyarakat orang kurang upaya ortopedik
  • Mengatur sukan, sosial, dan acara lain untuk kepentingan orang kurang upaya ortopedik
  • Memulakan, membantu, dan mengatur skema lain untuk orang kurang upaya ortopedik seperti yang dikehendaki oleh Persatuan untuk kebajikan dan rehabilitasi mereka
  • Mengumpul, menerima, mengurus, dan mengagihkan dana dan barang dalam bentuk yang dipercayakan kepada Persatuan
  • Menyebarkan maklumat, menerbitkan majalah, dan mengadakan mesyuarat untuk mendidik ibu bapa kanak-kanak kurang upaya ortopedik khususnya dan orang ramai secara umum
  • Membuat cadangan kepada kerajaan, dan memperjuangkan dan mempromosikan undang-undang, pindaan kepada undang-undang, dan peraturan kerajaan lain dalam kepentingan orang kurang upaya ortopedik
  • Bersekutu dengan badan lain di dalam Malaysia yang mempunyai matlamat dan objektif yang sama
  • Bersekutu dengan International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (badan pengawal sukan paraplegik dunia), dari Harvey Road, Aylesbury, England, dan pada masa akan datang dengan badan antarabangsa lain yang mempunyai matlamat dan objektif yang sama dengan Persatuan, dengan kelulusan awal Pendaftar Pertubuhan dalam setiap kes.
