Established on January 10, 2001, the Registrar of Societies, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, officially registered Pertubuhan Wanita dan Kesihatan, Kuala Lumpur (WAKE). This organization addresses the complex and multifaceted impacts of AIDS on both children and adults, including intense psychosocial and economic distress. Children orphaned by AIDS often face stigma and discrimination.

WAKE adopts a holistic approach to managing the health of these children and other residents of their Homes.

Outreach/Programs:
WAKE staff regularly visit areas where women work as sex workers, providing health counseling, including HIV/AIDS education, and guiding them toward rehabilitation. Their outreach program educates women, transsexuals, and female drug users about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and other diseases. These efforts are based at WAKE Outreach Centre (WOC) in Klang and serve Klang City and Port Klang.

Homes:

  1. RUMAH WAKE 1 – For Children: Provides care for HIV-infected children and affected siblings who have been abandoned. Currently, the Home houses 13 children aged 3+ to 15+. The children receive education, nutrition, and regular medical check-ups. Home Supervisors offer round-the-clock care and assistance with schoolwork. Social activities are integrated into their daily lives.
  2. RUMAH WAKE 2 – For Women: Offers shelter to homeless HIV-positive women without family support. The home provides a safe environment, psychosocial, and emotional support. Home Supervisors ensure regular hospital visits and support the residents’ needs.
  3. RUMAH WAKE 3 – For Transsexuals: Provides a safe space for homeless HIV-positive transsexuals. Residents receive psychosocial and emotional support, with Home Supervisors from among the transsexual community. Regular hospital visits are maintained, and transportation is arranged for immobile residents.

WAKE’s work significantly contributes to addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS within these communities.
